Verksamhetsberättelse 2021 för Datorföreningen Update ----------------------------------------------------- Författad av Anke Stüber (zeltophil) mars 2022 The year begins like the last one ended, with regular meetings of the "Rädda Update, Död Eller Levande" (RUDEL) group to prepare a continued existance of Update after the IT department's move to the new building. Due to Corona the RUDEL and other meetings are still held online throughout most of the year. It soon becomes clear that the only way to share rooms with Uppsala Makerspace (UMS) would be to dissolve Update into a subgroup of UMS, which is not an option for us. At the spring meeting we take the first step towards separating Update from the university by removing the requirement for members to have a connection to UU or SLU. The raised membership fee is well received and our war chest is starting to fill up. The RUDEL group has much to do. We start a Spreadshirt shop with Update merchandise. A new attempt to inventory our collection is initiated. We revive our lecture series "Updateringar", in which 7 talks are held during the rest of the year. The lectures are attended by vintage computing enthusiasts from all over the world, bringing in donations and even new members. We go to a first viewing of rooms in Gottsunda, which we reject because of their inconvenient location. The first possible sponsors are contacted. We discuss giving parts of our collection to Museum Gustavianum, but agree that this would only be an emergency solution. In May the sad news of the passing of beloved member Erik "keba" Berg reaches us. So many people from outside the university apply for memberships that the board decides to call to an extra general assembly to vote on opening Update for everyone a second time before the regular autumn meeting. The bylaw changes are adopted and even more new members are admitted. After lots of bureaucracy a new bank account at Swedbank is finally opened, which also lets us receive payments via Swish as often requested. The board applies for funding with the charity "Helene Elisabeth Bunkelmann Marckwardts Fond" and receives a substantial sum. Triptech and Levla sign contracts to support us with yearly sponsorships, Voi becomes a one-time sponsor. The future is starting to look brighter and we look at three more possible locations for new rooms, in Fjärdingen, Kåbo and Svartbäcken. Our attempts to gain more visibility are also successful: We participate in Kulturnatten with a video about the history of computing and organise the exhibition "Datorn i repris" in cooperation with Folkrörelsearkivet. We try to produce a new issue of Uptime, but to nobody's surprise we fail at that. Pontus has better success with printed matters and is featured in an interview in Uppsalatidningen. For the second year Update participates in the Vintage Computing Festival Berlin (VCFB), this time with both an exhibition on the Compis and a presentation about Update's history and outlook into the future by Pontus. Although Hemsö had previously promised us that we could stay at Polacksbacken until at least the end of February 2022, the university is nervous about our move being in the way of theirs and lets us know that we have to move out by the end of the year. Thus we speed up our preparations for the move and meet up regularly to sort and pack up our things. The rooms at Svartbäcksgatan are identified as the only viable option and the RUDEL group sketches out a plan for how to make use of the space there. The autumn meeting authorises the board to sign the rental contract. The move is imminent not only for our collection, but also on the digital side. We aquire the new domain dfupdate.se and the admins move over our services to Hetzner in Finland. Although the IT department is fine with us keeping our old domain for the time being, the practical details are still unclear. The UART group offers us to host a machine in their server room in the new building. On the second weekend in December we move most of our belongings to Svartbäcksgatan 65 with the help of many members and friends. As space is scarce, we give away some items from our collection, while others are thrown away. The traditional Update Christmas tree mysteriously vanishes, as does the green cactus neon sign. The year ends with the shipment of our Sun Enterprise 10000 to Nablaman in Lund, which only takes DHL three tries.
